Presenting the story of New Bedford’s fishing community to the world
Located at 38 Bethel Street in the nation's most valuable fishing port, New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center is dedicated to preserving and presenting the story of the fishing industry past, present, and future through exhibits, programs, archives, and community partnerships.
All Hands on Deck – Hands-on learning about safety at sea, including exhibit exploration, a short film and/or story time, and a hands-on survival suit activity. Recommended for upper elementary students.
Sea Monsters Real & Imagined – Discover sea monsters from myth and legend from around the world, such as Cape Verde’s Koakun-Klun and the Norse Kraken! Students will learn about the oral tradition and create their own sea monster-themed tales. Students can also make their own sea monsters using recycled plastic bottles. Recommended for upper elementary students.
Change Over Time – Students engage the Center’s exhibits and artifacts to understand changes in the workforce (immigration/gender history) and working conditions (labor history, sustainability/regulations, and vessel/gear/technology). Recommended for middle/high school students.
Working on the Waterfront – An introduction to career paths in the commercial fishing industry, at sea and on shore. Recommended for middle/high school students.

Working Waterfront Tour – Take a tour of New Bedford’s working waterfront! Students will learn about different types of fishing boats and gear, the history of the seafood auction and other essential shoreside businesses, and the unique experience of fishing families. Tour also includes stops at the historic Seamen’s Bethel and Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey (as their schedule allows). Suitable for all ages.
Q&A with Fisherman – Learn about the commercial fishing industry from the fishermen themselves. Suitable for all ages.
Self-guided Tour of FHC – Students explore FHC’s two exhibits. For younger students, worksheets, scavenger hunts, and coloring sheets are available on request at the front desk. Suitable for all ages.
